Global rise of populism in the "West" and the "rest"

Discussion

Time: Thursday, Jan 24 at 4 pm - 6 pm

Venue: University of Tampere, Linna-building, K113, Kalevantie 5

In the dawn of 2017, populist politics influence the world, taking distinct forms in different countries and regions. This panel discussion brings together three perspectives on populism, from the revival of the anti-liberal West in the form of Trumpism, to radical right-wing populism in Western Europe, to the Philippines' populist moment under President Rodrigo Duterte. What have these, often nationally or regionally specific phenomena to do with one another? How do they differ –and how does that very difference shape global politics? Come listen, and join the discussion.

The panelists and presentations include:

"The revival of anti-liberal West: A new struggle within the West and its implications to the rest"
Docent Marko Lehti (TAPRI, University of Tampere)

"Radical right-wing populism in Western Europe"
Prof. Elina Kestilä-Kekkonen (Faculty of Management, University of Tampere)

Statement on the Elections 2016

(Statement was approved in the annual meeting of Finnish-Philippine Society on March 11, 2016)

The Finnish-Philippine Society strongly believes that the basis in choosing the future president of the Philippines should be the protection of human rights. The Finnish-Philippine Society was founded right after the fall of Marcos dictatorship, and therefore the society supports the development of democracy and human rights in the Philippines for the very beginning. Now, 30 years after the People Power revolution, the Philippines is once again facing an election trend that provides enough grounds for some grave concerns.

The whole Filipino nation has rightly been dissatisfied with the slow judicial system and the fact that most crimes remain unresolved for a very long time. However, human rights must be respected in all circumstances, and this problem cannot be addressed by committing another crime or through arbitrary punishment of the suspects in the absence of a fair trial. "Small-time" criminals and even street children have already been suffering from such policies even to this day.

Taking the law into your own hands and mass killings will not increase the feeling of security of the citizens, nor does it solve crimes. The issue of poverty and inequality can only be resolved by addressing the root causes that give rise to these problems.

Other important factors should also be taken into account in the selecting the right candidate for the coming elections, one of which is the candidate's commitment to dismantle bureaucratic structures that contribute or generate widespread corruption in the government. However, the Finnish-Philippine Society believes that in considering all these factors, we should first take the perspective of protecting the fundamental human rights. The much needed change in our society can only be achieved by ensuring the protection of human rights and dignity.

Interview: Philippines – Freedom came but poverty prevailed (FIN/PHI)
InequalityDevelopment
Sun 24.5.2015 13.30-14.00 Taiga Stage

After the dictator was brought down in the Philippines nearly three decades ago, democracy has prevailed. But how does it help the millions of poor people? The economy is growing, but the gap between the rich and the poor is still wide. Does income inequality reduce poverty just like bankers say? How can the civil society and trade unions reduce inequality in the Philippines? The regional coordinator of SASK, Marlon Quesada, Pekka Borg from Filippiinit-seura (Finnish-Philippine Sovciety) and reporter / TV producer Jussi-Pekka Rantanen discuss the topic.

Producer of the interview: SASK

Panel Discussion: What kind of development do free trade agreements pursue?
Global economy, Development, Environment
Sun 24.5.2015 16.05–-16.35 Mekong Stage

In today?s global pursuit of new trade and investment agreements, the EU-USA TTIP agreement, the EU-Canada CETA agreement and the over 50 state-spanning TISA agreement are among the most comprehensive and influential. If completed and ratified, any of these agreements would influence the standards and rules of global markets. In the discussion, we ask what kind of development and direction these agreements would bring about; what do they really promise? What would their effects on the Global South be? And what about human rights and local food production/sovereignty? Researcher Bonn Juego from University of Jyväskylä, General Secretary Päivi Mattila from The Finnish League for Human Rights, Teivo Teivainen, professor for international politics, University of Helsinki and Niklas Toivakainen from the TTIP network will discuss the topics.

Interview: Fair brands, better mood — On responsible food production (FIN/IND)
Global economy, Development, Food

Sun 24.5.2015 16.35-17.00 Mekong Stage

What problems exist in the production chains of European food brands? How do production conditions affect the lives of primary producers? What are their impact on environmental and human rights in the Global South? What could be the solutions? The Finnish NGO Finnwatch promotes responsible production in a new Europe-wide project that focuses particularly on European food brands' production chains. In what ways can supermarkets implement corporate social responsibility? Come and learn how you can participate in the project over the next three years in Finland and other parts of Europe! Researcher Bonn Juego from University of Jyväskylä will be interviewed by executive director Sonja Vartiala from Finnwatch.

Would you give corporations the power to sue governments? The current negotiations for new agreements (TTIP, CETA, TISA) are being held behind closed doors. From leaked documents we know that TTIP and CETA would give big corporations the right to sue governments for laws that protect citizens and the environment. There are many resons to be worried.

Among speakers, Dr. Bonn Juego from University of Jyväskylä (originally from the Philippines) will talk about free trade agreements and underdevelopments.

10 embassies, consulates to be closed this year

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said 10 foreign service posts will be closed down this year, amid growing opposition from overseas Filipino communities.

According to Foreign Affairs spokesperson Raul Hernandez, the 10 embassies and consulates to be shuttered are:

Koror, Palau
Caracas, Venezuela
Barcelona, Spain
Stockholm, Sweden
Dublin, Ireland
Frankfurt, Germany
Havana, Cuba
Saipan
Bucharest, Romania
Helsinki, Finland

In an interview on ANC's Dateline Philippines, Hernandez said budgetary constraints forced the government to order the closing of these diplomatic posts.

Another factor is the country's strong labor laws that will protect the migrant Filipino workers, even with the closure of the Philippine post.

"The reason why we have closed down 10 foreign service posts is mainly due to budgetary constraints. We will devote our scarce resources to where we can achieve greater impact on our national interests. We will realign our limited funds to posts where there are more distressed OFWs, who come to us for help, like in Middle East," he said.

Despite protests from the Filipino communities that will be affected by the posts' closures, Hernandez assured several honorary consul, who will help the OFWs, will be appointed.

"We don't like to close any embassy or consulate for that matter but the fact is we have limited budget and we have to use our scarce resources to where we can maximize these. The nearest consulate will assume the diplomatic and consular duties of those that will be closed," he said. - With ANC, 5.3.2012

Caring culture in Finland and the Philippines
Discussion on Saturday, April 6

Time: Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 15.00 pm

Place: Moniheli, Työpajankatu 2, 2. floor, 00580 Helsinki, close to metro station Kalasatama (http://www.moniheli.fi/fi/ota-yhteyttae.html)

Filipino nurses have a good reputation everywhere in the world - and probably not without a good reason. They are working in the hospitals and caring homes of over 100 countries from Saudi Arabia to USA, from UK to Norway. Some of them have also been imported to Finland and more are being recruited.

What is the view of a nurse about differences between the Philippines and Finland - or is their any difference between the two caring cultures? We asked nurse Marites Kuittinen to come and discuss the theme.

The performance is in Finnish, but in discussion, both Finnish and English can be used.
Free entrance, welcome!

Data being collected on Filipinos in Finland

The Embassy is collecting data on all the Filipinos living in Finland. On the Embassy's website http://helsinkipe.fi/home/ there is an online link for your registration. Or, please, download a form here and send your registration asap.

Philippine ePassports

The Philippine Embassy in Helsinki processes applications for Philippine ePassports. The ePassport will cost 60,00 Euros. Since all biometric data are captured electronically at the Embassy, applicants will have to make a personal appearance for their application. But applicants are no longer required to submit passport photos. All other requirements remain the same.

The ePassport is a passport which features microchip technology. An integrated circuit (IC) chip within its pages contains the data that are essential in verifying the identity of the passport holder. These data include the biometrics of the passport holder, the unique chip identification number and a digital signature to verify the authenticity of the data stored on the chip.

The new ePassport greatly increases the confidence of international immigration authorities in the authenticity and integrity of the passport holder's identity, allowing for more convenient processing at international ports of entry while helping prevent identity theft and tampering of personal data.

"TRANS:CULTURE" is global contemporary design that draws from and pays tribute to the rich Philippine history.

Next-generation Philippine-oriented designers reinterpret traditional artifacts that have been iconic in Filipino history and culture in future design, as they combine the old with their new adapted culture. The synthesis of the two brings about the new face of Philippine design – fresh, different and interesting.

Epoch symbolizes a new movement in Philippine design composed of young designers and artists with Filipino roots but based all over the world. They are driven by inspiration and the desire to show beauty and meaning in surprising, unpredictable designs that break barriers.

Independencia - Filipino movie in Helsinki on Sunday, November 7

Lens Politica – Film and Media Art Festival in Helsinki 3. - 7.11.2010 will be held for the fifth time this year. It will introduce us some Southeast Asian films, among them one famous movie from the Philippines:

INDEPENDENCIA (Ohjaus: Raya Martin, Philippines, France, Germany, Netherlands | 2009 | 77 min | fiction). Independencia, an experimental drama by a Philipino director, fazes the audience by exploiting the conventions of silent films in its dreamy, studio-like, black and white footage from the jungle. A young man flees from the war to the jungle with his mother. Sexuality, the death of the mother, and birth of a baby in the jungle raise questions about civilization and destructiveness of shared life. The jungle is an isolated paradise, where the American soldiers appear as mystical, luminous figures to the child, who was raised there. The film was screened in 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It is a comment on the American invasion of the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century by internationally praised independent film director Raya Martin.

Screened in Cinema Andorra, Eerikinkatu 11, Sunday, November 7 at 2 pm.

Lens Politica
Film and Media Art Festival 3 - 7 November 2010, Helsinki
Opening screening 3 November 7 pm at Finnish Academy of Fine Arts (Kaikukatu 4)
Opening club 3 November 9 pm at Siltanen, (Hämeentie 13)
Film screenings & Festival clubs 4 to 7 November at Andorra&Dubrovnik (Eerikinkatu 11)
